Flying into Half Moon Bay

The harbor at Half Moon Bay

Best time of the year to go? All year! I understand there are a lot more VFR days during the winter.
Flight time in a Super Viking from KAJO? 2.2
Food on the airport? Several places within a 1/4 mile walk.
Fuel on airport? Yes, but it's not cheap.
Comments about arriving and departing  Watch the weather here. IFR a lot! After landing taxi as far southeast as possible for walk to town parking.

Landing at Half Moon Bay Airport!

I'd  heard about the Half Moon Bay Airport for a long time but, it's a long way from home base. I filed it away for a time when I needed a good trip. After several weeks of local area breakfast runs I was looking for that good trip and Half Moon Bay made the short list.

The first challenge most pilots face is getting into and out of the airport. Half Moon Bay has more than it's share of IMC days and the instrument approaches require an IFR approved GPS.

You can eat at the airport or go to town for a meal. Assuming you are going to town don't park in transit parking. Turn south and taxi about a half mile to the far southeast corner of the airport where you'll find a gate to town. Just outside that gate there are about 5 restaurants within the first 1/4 mile. If you walk past the harbor and continue down the beach you'll find a nice place up on the bluff called Sam's Chowder House. Sitting on the patio overlooking the harbor drinking made from scratch Bloody Mary's (virgin) was nice.

The disappointing part of this trip was just how how small Half Moon Bay is. After a hour or two you've seen all there is. A good place to stop for a meal but don't expect any more. It's not Morro Bay.
