Comments about arriving and departing.  Glider operations on the north side of the field. Parachute operations just west of airport at Perris Valley. Stay east of I-15 to avoid parachute operations at Lake Elsinore. Heavy traffic during fire fighting operations. Class C West though North.
Things to do at or near the airport. Good food, glider operations and a small airport museum. Hemet-Ryan is also a fire attack base.

Catch a meal at Bambi's Hangar One Cafe.
I've stopped at the Hemet-Ryan Cafe before but it was always closed. Locals said they had no set hours so I never returned. I heard the Cafe had been reopened by a new owner so I decided to give it another try.

What a pleasant surprise! Bambi's Hangar One Cafe is clean and the food excellent. Good breakfast and she packs both pilots and the locals in. For lunch try the sandwiches, southern sweet tea and home made pies.

My first trip was 5 minutes before closing and I was welcomed like a regular. After ordering Bambi said they were out of that item "I'll make you something." I could see her in the back working between the cooks; "Do you like onion?" Yes I answered, I had no idea what she was making. Pretty soon she arrived with a pastrami sandwich, home made bean salad and a slice of plum-pear pie. Of course the pie was homemade, you don't get plum-pear pie at Costco.

"Our pastrami is really good, I made the bean salad and pie. How about some more sweet tea?"  What an enjoyable experience. For SoCal pilots this is a short flight out of the hustle and bustle of the Los Angeles basin..

After landing Taxi east and south of the hangars towards the airport museum. You won't see the Cafe at first but there is plenty of parking around the restaurant.  The little place gets busy and you might have to wait for a table.

Bambi's Hangar One Cafe' Nothing intimidates a Super Viking!
Lake Elsinore California I was enroute to Hemet Ryan and I could see someone had ditched in the lake. It really scared me at first.
Fire Fighting Seaplane "The Martin Mars air tanker. The 7,200 gallon air tanker will be based at Lake Elsinore, California  from June 1 through November 15, 2009 with an option to renew for two additional years."
Lake Elsinore Not every day you see an operating, earning her keep, four engine seaplane. I guess she's under contract with Cal Fire.
Here are some pictures I found on the internet.
